Upon their return to India, the England team led by Ben Stokes arrived in Rajkot following a 10-day stint in Abu Dhabi. However, their arrival at Rajkot was marked by a series of noteworthy events. Notably, leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed encountered an obstacle at Hirasar Airport as immigration officers detained him due to an issue with his visa documentation. Among the 31-member England contingent, Ahmed stood as the sole individual facing visa discrepancies in Rajkot, bearing a single-entry visa that restricted re-entry into India once departed.
After the issuance of a temporary visa, Ahmed was granted permission to proceed, with both the BCCI and ECB expressing confidence in resolving the matter within the ensuing 24 hours. Importantly, this setback did not hinder Ahmed’s participation in practice sessions with the England squad. This incident marks the second visa-related ordeal faced by an England player during the ongoing tour. Previously, off-spinner Shoaib Bashir encountered a similar situation, necessitating a return to London for procedural formalities before joining the team in India. Although he missed the series opener in Hyderabad, Bashir managed to make his debut in the subsequent Test held in Visakhapatnam.
Following their defeat in Visakhapatnam, Stokes and his teammates opted for a brief respite, journeying to Abu Dhabi for recreational activities during a training camp preceding their return to India. Departing from the conventional routes via Ahmedabad or Mumbai, the England team opted for a direct chartered flight to Rajkot, marking the inaugural international flight to land directly at the destination. To facilitate this, a temporary immigration counter was established, supervised by officials from Jamnagar.
Both India and England are poised to commence official practice sessions at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Tuesday, ahead of the pivotal third Test slated to commence on Thursday. England will initiate their training at 9:30 a.m., continuing until noon, while India’s session is scheduled for the afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m..
Despite their recent triumph, India faces numerous challenges, predominantly stemming from injury concerns and key player unavailability. Virat Kohli’s absence throughout the series due to personal reasons was confirmed last week, while KL Rahul’s exclusion from the third Test was announced by the BCCI on Monday. Although Rahul’s inclusion in the squad for the remaining Tests is contingent upon fitness, the BCCI medical team asserts his current fitness level at 90%, necessitating additional recovery time before match readiness. His participation in Ranchi and Dharamsala appears highly probable.
Consequently, India’s middle order confronts a significant vacuum, compounded by the absence of Kohli, Rahul’s injury, and Shreyas Iyer’s dismissal following a lackluster performance with the bat. The onus now falls upon Rajat Patidar, who debuted in Visakhapatnam, alongside either Sarfaraz Khan or Devdut Padikkal, with one of them poised to make their debut. Presently, Sarfaraz, a prior member of the squad, emerges as the likely candidate for selection.
The return of Ravindra Jadeja offers a silver lining for India; however, this necessitates a choice between Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav for inclusion in the playing XI.
With the series level at 1-1, both teams brace themselves for a fiercely contested five-match series.
