As the International League T20 (ILT20) gears up for its third season, scheduled to commence on January 11, 2024, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) is setting its sights on securing an exclusive window in the global cricket calendar. This bold move aims to establish the ILT20 as a major force in the world of T20 cricket, rivaling even the prestigious Indian Premier League (IPL). The league is well-positioned to grow even further, thanks to more fans attending games and getting involved, along with partnerships and creative marketing ideas.
Since its inception, the ILT20 has been a platform for showcasing top international talent alongside promising local players. The league has six teams. Half of these teams belong to the same owners as some of the IPL franchises, like Reliance Industries, Shah Rukh Khan, and GMR Group. The other three teams belong to the Adani Group, the Glazer family (who also own Manchester United), and Capri Global. This blend of cricket and business acumen has made the ILT20 a formidable contender in the crowded T20 landscape.
In its second season, the ILT20 saw a dramatic rise in stadium attendance, with a 300% increase from the first season, surpassing 200,000 spectators. This surge in fan engagement was a testament to the league’s growing popularity and the successful efforts of its organizers to create a carnival-like atmosphere around the matches. David White, the CEO of ILT20 and former chief executive of New Zealand Cricket, noted the league’s progress, stating, “We have seen remarkable growth in fan engagement, and our focus is now on building on this momentum to establish ILT20 as a premier global T20 event.”
One of the key challenges for the ILT20 is securing a dedicated window in the international cricket calendar, free from clashes with other major tournaments. Currently, the ILT20 overlaps with South Africa’s T20 league, which poses a challenge for viewership and player availability. David White acknowledged this issue, stating, “Securing an exclusive window is crucial for the league’s long-term success. We are in discussions with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to find a period where no other leagues are active, ensuring ILT20 stands out in the global cricket calendar.”
Despite the ongoing pursuit of sole broadcasting rights, the league remains hopeful. The goal is to position the ILT20 as the second-most important T20 league in the world, right after the IPL. An exclusive window would not only eliminate competition from other leagues but also attract top players from around the world, further enhancing the league’s appeal.
ZEE Entertainment Enterprises, which secured a 10-year media rights deal with the ECB valued at approximately $100 million, has played a pivotal role in the ILT20’s success. The broadcaster has been instrumental in increasing the league’s reach and enhancing the viewer experience. Ashish Sehgal, ZEE’s Chief Growth Officer for Digital & Broadcast Revenue, emphasized the company’s commitment to making ILT20 more than just a cricket tournament. This season, we’re prioritizing innovative advertising strategies and boosting fan engagement with exciting initiatives like giveaways and contests. We want to build a carnival-like atmosphere that appeals to both local fans and international visitors,” Sehgal explained.
Last season, ZEE aired ILT20 matches across 10 channels and on its OTT platform, ZEE5, reaching 220 million viewers. For the upcoming season, ZEE plans to expand its coverage by adding five more South Indian channels, bringing the total number of linear TV channels to 15. This expansion is expected to increase the league’s reach to 230 million viewers. Despite the broader channel availability, the commentary will continue to be in English and Hindi, ensuring accessibility for the majority of the target audience.

Beyond securing an exclusive window and expanding its broadcast reach, the ILT20 is focused on creating a sustainable financial model. With a salary cap of $2.5 million per team, the league offers competitive remuneration for players while maintaining financial viability. “Our goal is to make ILT20 profitable as quickly as possible,” White noted. It’s just as crucial to develop the league in a way that benefits everyone involved—players, franchises, and commercial partners alike.
The ILT20 has played an undeniable role in advancing cricket in the UAE. By featuring top international stars alongside local talent, the league is helping to raise the profile of cricket in the region. The exposure to high-level competition is invaluable for local players, who gain experience and visibility on a global stage.
Looking ahead, the ILT20 is focused on deepening its collaborations with partners and franchises to create a more cohesive and engaging experience for fans. This includes developing stronger rivalries between teams, enhancing the matchday experience with more competitive games, and introducing fan-centric activities that go beyond the cricket field.
ZEE’s strategy also involves leveraging its extensive network to attract a broader audience, including non-traditional cricket viewers. By airing ILT20 matches on entertainment channels, ZEE is introducing new fans to the sport, which is crucial for the league’s growth. White stated, “Our goal is to build a league that not only succeeds commercially but also establishes itself as a prominent event in the international cricket calendar, just behind the IPL.”
While the ILT20 has made significant strides, challenges remain. The competition for viewership with other T20 leagues, particularly South Africa’s T20 league, is a significant hurdle. However, the league’s management is confident that securing an exclusive window will address this issue, allowing the ILT20 to carve out its niche in the global cricket landscape.
Another challenge is the absence of Indian players, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not allow its players to participate in international leagues. Despite this, the ILT20 has managed to attract top talent from other cricketing nations, including England, New Zealand, the West Indies, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The inclusion of players from these countries, coupled with the presence of two UAE players in each team, makes the ILT20 a truly international league.
As the ILT20 prepares for its third season, the stakes have never been higher. The league’s quest for an exclusive window, combined with its focus on fan engagement and sustainable growth, positions it as a formidable player in the world of T20 cricket. With the support of strategic partners like ZEE and a growing fan base, the ILT20 is well on its way to becoming a permanent fixture in the global cricket calendar. The journey ahead will undoubtedly be challenging, but the ILT20 has proven that it has the vision and the resources to succeed.
