England batsman Joe Root, who debuted for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL earlier this year, has decided to withdraw from the IPL 2024, just a day before the retention deadline. The Royals announced in a statement on their website that they “fully respect” Root’s choice.
“During our discussions regarding player retention, Joe informed us of his decision to not participate in IPL 2024,” stated Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals’ director of cricket. “Joe was only with us for a short while, but in that time, he had a huge positive impact on the team and his teammates. His presence and valuable experience will be missed within the Royals’ setup. We completely respect his decision and extend our best wishes to him in all his future endeavors.
Rob Key, England’s managing director of men’s cricket, expressed that Root “needs a break” following the World Cup, considering his continuous engagements in various cricketing events. Key highlighted Root’s relentless schedule since his exploits in New Zealand and Pakistan, followed by appearances in the IPL 2023, the Hundred, and the Ashes.
The Royals acquired Root at the IPL 2023 auction for his base price of INR 1 crore, or roughly US $121,000 at the time. Despite playing only three games, with a single batting opportunity where he scored 10 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Jaipur, Root actively absorbed knowledge to adapt to the T20 format.
During his time in India, Root embraced the role of a “sponge,” absorbing diverse insights and enjoying the company of emerging talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag.
The franchise emphasized Root’s influence on the team, providing invaluable experience to youngsters like Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Additionally, his camaraderie with England teammate Jos Buttler and his rapport with Yuzvendra Chahal were notable highlights of his stint with the Royals.
Root joins his Test captain Ben Stokes as the second England player to withdraw from the upcoming IPL season. Franchises have until November 26 to finalize their releases and retentions ahead of the auction on December 19.
Amidst these developments, the Royals have been active in the trade window, acquiring India fast bowler Avesh Khan from the Lucknow Super Giants while parting ways with Devdutt Padikkal, who joins the Super Giants.
Bowler Mayank Dagar was traded for Indian all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed with the aid of his preceding squad, the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Ahmed will join Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2019 season. The IPL has officially confirmed that this trade constitutes a direct swap between the two teams.
Dagar, who represents Himachal Pradesh in domestic cricket, made three appearances for the Sunrisers in his debut IPL season after being acquired for INR 1.8 crore ($219,000 approx.) during the 2023 auction. The Royals acquired Root at the IPL 2023 auction for his base price of INR 1 crore, or roughly US $121,000 at the time.
Both Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore are under new management for the upcoming season. The Sunrisers have appointed Daniel Vettori as their new head coach, while RCB has named Andy Flower to the same role.
